Mi amiga Olivia

Mi amiga Olivia,
While in Ba I stayed in a Hostel with a room with 8 other beds. There was only one bed being used by a nice girl named Olivia. The most surprising thing to me is that Olivia ( her Spanish name) is from China. She is in BA to study Spanish for an entire year. Because it is a little difficult to get an apt being a gringo she has been staying at the Hostel. She has classes almost everyday except weekends.
I asked  her if she wanted to spend the day with me Saturday
She agreed so we seriously had the funnest day together at the botanical gardens and the Japenese garden and visiting the parliament buildings together.
The funnest thing is that she doesn’t speak a word of English and I don’t speak a word of Chinese so we just spoke Spanish to each other the whole entire time.
When I left Sunday she accompanied me to the bus station and we said goodbye. She cried, and made me cry telling me ‘’ tu eres mi major amiga aqua’’ meaning: you are my best friend here.
The thing is that I am rather sure that it is true. She doesn’t have many friends and it is rather hard for her. Now I want to go to China.
I love that connection you can have with a person, we only really spend two whole days together but I really bonded with her even if we both couldn’t speak very much Spanish. It was as though that was what linked us together, we both had patience with each other and we both had our dictionaries handy looking for words to explain situations.
It made me realize how we live in such a beautiful world full of different cultures and really all every needs is human contact, connection. Olivia made my trip worth while and I will sincerely miss her very much.
Gracias amiga
